You've probably heard of "buy local campaigns," the idea that supporting local businesses like coffee shops, bookstores and farmers can help the economy. But in this week's edition of upside/downside, we're talking about the benefits of buying local on a really large scale. The Cleveland Foundation is targeting a number of the largest businesses in the University Circle Neighborhood with the idea that if they do more business with local companies, it could really benefit the community. Now that University Hospitals, the Cleveland Clinic and Case Western Reserve University are on board, a number of worker owned cooperatives are springing up to help meet this new demand. ideastream®'s Eric Wellan spoke with Lillian Kuri, a program officer with the Cleveland Foundation.
